Chess Department of the Glukhiv City Children and Youth Sport School

The Glukhiv City Children and Youth Sports School (director – Koltachikhin Fedir) is located in Glukhov, Sumy region. It is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, located on the banks of the picturesque Esman River. In the city, there are approximately 32,000 residents. The Children and Youth Sport School is engaged in the upbringing of students with sport talents starting from 1966 and is one of the leading sports schools in the Sumy region. A significant contribution to the development of sports in the city and the region is made by the chess department.

The head trainer of the chess department is Oleksandr Kelbas, a Candidate for Master of Sports and a trainer with many years of experience.

As of 2023, 64 children are studying in the chess department.

The educational and training process takes place in accordance with the approved schedule in 6 study groups, including 4 groups of preliminary basic training for the first year of study, 1 group of preliminary basic training for the second year of study and 1 group of preliminary basic training for the third year of study. The average duration of classes in groups with children under 8 years old is 90 minutes, 9-12 years old – 135 minutes, 13-16 years old – 160 minutes. On average, each group practises 2-3 times a week.

In 2023, the training staff of the chess department includes 3 teachers: Oleksandr Kelbas – the head trainer, a Candidate for Master of Sports, Tetiana Kelbas – the trainer, a Candidate for Master of Sports, Svitlana Kelbas – the trainer, has 1st rank in chess according to the Ukrainian system.

During 2020-2023, 77 students of the chess department fulfilled the standards of the sport category, in particular: 40 chess players got the 4th rank, 20 chess players got the 3rd rank, 10 chess players got the 2nd rank and 1 5 chess players got the 1st rank according to the Ukrainian ranking system. 2 chess players became Candidates for Master of Sports.

The best students of the chess department are the following: Ihor Cenchenko (born in 2005, CM), Andriy Panchenko (born in 2006, CM), Kelbas Yaromir (born in 2009, 1st rank), Anastasia Chuchvaga (born in 2006, 1st rank), Masalitov Ilya (born in 2006, 1st rank), Oleksiy Shumytskyi (born in 2009, 2nd rank), Kostiantyn Korchov (born in 2008, 2nd rank).

Students of the Chess Department of the Glukhiv City Children and Youth Sport School take part in international, all-Ukrainian, regional and local chess tournaments.
