Award named after Evgeniy Sozonov is a private national annual award. It was established by Olena Boytsun in 2013 with the aim of supporting talented children aged between 10 to 16 years old, who show good results in both chess and school studies.

In 2014, the Sozonov Award was awarded for the second time for children aged 10 to 15 years. Applications for participation in the award competition were accepted from October 20, 2014 to December 12, 2014, the results were announced on December 18, 2014.

30 applications were submitted for participation in the contest, of which boys made up 63% of participants, while girls – 37%.

For 2014, the Sozonov Award was awarded to one winner (amount of the prize – 5,000 hryvnias). In addition, eight shortlisted runners-up were awarded.

Dmytro Osadchuk

(Gamarnya village, Zhytomyr region, age at the time of receiving the award: 11 years, 1st rank in chess according to the Ukrainian system)

Dmytro Osadchuk studies in the 6th grade of Malyn Secondary School No. 3, his favourite subjects are mathematics, computer science, and physical education. He participated in the city mathematics Olympiad. He has been playing chess for 6 years, and has the 1st rank in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). He trains in the Malinsky city centre of children and youth creativity, where he studies with the trainer Andriy Pavlovsky. Dmytro is the winner of all-Ukrainian chess tournaments – memorials of M. Anfiorov and V. Kiselyov, prize-winner of the international festival “Shakhova desna”, “Chess Youth of Polissia”, champion of the Zhytomyr region among children under 10 years old. He is fond of reading books, football, computer science and playing the button accordion. Dmytro also received a special certificate from the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Igor Zhdanov for winning the competition for the Award named after Evgeniy Sozonov and the popularisation of the game of chess.

Update from 2023: Dmytro is studying at the 3rd year of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Ihor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, majoring in “Automation and computer-integrated technologies”. He works as a chess trainer (online).

Danylo Volobuev

Danylo Volobuev studies in the 5th grade of the Physical and Mathematical Lyceum No. 208 in Kyiv, his favourite subjects are mathematics, logic, history and English. He has letters of commendation for high academic achievements, winner and prize-winner of school Olympiads, student competitions. He has been practising chess for 5 years with coach Berezin Viktor at the Children and Youth Sports School No. 3 (Kyiv), has a 1st rank in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). Danylo is a winner and prize-winner of chess competitions among boys in different age categories. Danylo is interested in the history of Ukraine, likes to read and plays strategic board games. In addition to chess, he is engaged in speed skating (roller sports), karate and football.

Anastasia-Solomia Hrytsyna

Anastasia-Solomia Hrytsyna studies in the 3rd grade of the Lviv Academic Gymnasium at the Lviv Polytechnic National University, her favourite subjects are mathematics and English. She is a winner and prize-winner of various student competitions. She has been playing chess for 8 years and has the 1st rank in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). She is currently training at the Lviv Children and Youth Specialized Chess School “Debut” under coach Anton Romashov. Anastasia-Solomiya repeatedly became the winner and prize-winner of children regional chess competitions and championships in Poland. The girl is fond of drawing and studies at the Lviv Children Art School named after O. Novakivskyi, participates in Ukrainian and international exhibitions of children drawing.

Anastasiya Kelbas

Anastasiya Kelbas studies in the 5th grade of primary school I-III grades No.2 in the city of Sumy, her favourite subjects are mathematics and physical education. She took part in student competitions. She has been playing chess for 6 years with coach Svitlana Kelbas (the girl’s mother) at the Glukhiv City Children and Youth Sports School, and has a 1st rank in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). Anastasiya is a champion and prize-winner of all-Ukrainian chess competitions among girls in various age categories. In 2014, she became the silver medalist of the championship of Ukraine in rapid chess in the category under 10 years. Anastasia is fond of creativity: she makes pictures from plasticine and products from paper, fabric, attends the after-school education centre, the club “Floristics and phytodesign of the interior”. Also she plays volleyball.

Dmytro Komarenko

Dmytro Komarenko is studying in the 7th grade of secondary comprehensive school No. 83 in Kyiv, his favourite subject is mathematics. He is a winner and prize-winner of subject Olympiads, student competitions. He has been playing chess for 3.5 years, has the 1st rank in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). Attends the Chess and Drafts School “Avangard”, where he trains with Valerii Grinev. Dmytro is a winner and prize-winner of all-Ukrainian chess competitions among boys in various age categories. He is passionate about building and programming LEGO Mindstorms robots and attends the swimming section and is the winner of many swimming competitions.

Oleg Lysytskyi

Oleg Lysytskyi studies in the 8th grade of the Specialized Secondary School No. 9 with an in-depth study of the English language, his favourite subject is physical education. He is winner and prize-winner of subject Olympiads and student competitions. He has been playing chess for 8 years, and has the 1st rank in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). He trains at City Children and Youth Sports School No. 9 (Dnipropetrovsk) under coach Korzh Leontii. Oleg is a winner and prize-winner of regional championships among boys in various age categories. In addition to chess, he trains in karate.

Anna Slynko

Anna Slynko studies in the 4th grade of the Gymnasium of Languages of Asia No. 1, her favourite subject is the Chinese language. She is a winner and prize-winner of school and district Olympiads in the Ukrainian language. She has been playing chess for 4 years, and has a 2nd category in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). Anna trains at Chess and Drafts School “Avangard” with coach Popov Pavlo. Anna is a winner of local chess championships among girls in various age categories. In addition to chess, she practises aikido, likes to read and draw.

Andrii Chenzov

Andrii Chenzov studies in the 8-A class of the Makiivka secondary school of the I-III degrees No. 32, his favourite subject is mathematics. He took part in subject Olympiads in mathematics, Ukrainian literature, and history. He attends additional classes in English. He has been playing chess for 7 years, and has the title of Candidate for Master of Sports. Andrii attends the Donetsk Children and Youth Sports School No. 1, where he trains with Prykhodko Oleksandr. He is winner and prize-winner of regional championships among boys in various age categories. In addition to chess, he is fond of playing table tennis.

Viktoria Shvets

Viktoria Shvets studies at the Khmelnytskyi specialised school of the 1st degree No. 30. She is a winner and prize-winner of school Olympiads and various stages of international competitions (“Kolosok”, “Kangaroo”, “Greenwich”). She has been playing chess for 2 years at Children and Youth Sports School No. 2, has a 1st rank in chess (according to the Ukrainian system). Viktoria trains with Maryna Zingaylo. She is a winner and prize-winner of chess competitions among girls in different age categories. She is fond of sculpting plasticine miniatures, quilling, studying dog breeds and attends drawing group and dance school “Al-Shuruk”.

The Sozonov award ceremony for 2014

On December 20, 2014, the awarding ceremony for the winner and runners-up of the Award named after Evgeniy Sozonov was held at the Gambit Chess Club in Kyiv. The ceremony was conducted by the founder of the Award, Olena Boytsun. The winners and runners-up of the Sozonov Award competition in 2014 and 2013, honoured guests, many young chess players took part in the ceremony.
